Hatcheries and Harvest

Hatchery and harvest management were primary bottlenecks to salmon and steelhead recovery at the time of Endangered Species Act listings.

Multiple reform strategies have been implemented since then, and are guided locally by the Lower Columbia Conservation and Sustainable Fisheries Plan, which was adopted by the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife on February 9, 2017.

Conservation and Sustainable Fisheries Plan
  • The Conservation and Sustainable Fisheries Plan identifies population and stock level recovery targets for hatchery and harvest impacts, and specific actions to reduce impacts while still supporting fisheries. This plan supports the regional recovery plan as well as the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission Policy C-3624.
